Polar Bear with Cubs

Ryke Yseøyane, Svalbard, Norway

July 2001
A sow cradles one of her cubs.
These cubs were about six months old,
and will stay close of their mother for at least two years.
Polar bears are good swimmers.
They have webbed paws that help propel them through the water.
Rolling on the ice squeezes trapped water from her fur.
This family
of polar bears
seemed as curious
about us
as we were
about them.
